Gorilla Trekking in East Africa: Rwanda & Uganda
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda offers an unforgettable wildlife experience, allowing you to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. In Rwanda, treks take place in Volcanoes National Park, home to over 12 habituated gorilla families. Known for its relatively easier hikes due to open bamboo forests, Rwanda provides a luxury gorilla trekking experience, with permits costing $1,500 per person.
In Uganda, gorilla trekking is available in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which together shelter more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Bwindi is famous for its challenging terrain and dense jungle, making the trek adventurous. Gorilla permits in Uganda are more affordable, at $800 per person.
Treks typically last 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location, and each visit is limited to one hour to minimize human impact. To participate, visitors must be at least 15 years old, in good physical condition, and follow strict conservation guidelines.
For the best experience, plan your trek during the dry seasons (June–September & December–February) when trails are more accessible. Whether you choose Rwanda’s easier treks with premium lodges or Uganda’s more affordable and rugged adventures, encountering gorillas up close is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll never forget!
