Akagera National Park – Where Wildlife Roams, and Nature Thrives!
Akagera National Park
Located in eastern Rwanda, is the country’s largest protected wetland and the only park offering a Big Five safari experience. Covering 1,122 square kilometers, it features savannas, lakes, wetlands, and woodlands, providing a habitat for elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and diverse bird species.
The park, once affected by poaching, has been successfully restored through conservation efforts led by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and African Parks. Visitors can enjoy game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, birdwatching, and guided nature walks. With its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife, Akagera offers an unforgettable safari experience in Rwanda.
Wildlife and Birdlife in Akagera National Park are incredibly diverse, featuring Rwanda’s only Big Five safari experience with elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffaloes, alongside giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and antelopes. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to over 500 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork, African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, and giant kingfisher. Akagera’s mix of savannas, wetlands, and lakes makes it a prime destination for wildlife safaris, boat tours, and birdwatching adventures.
