Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park
A Dazzling Encounter in Rwanda’s Volcanoes!
Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park
A unique opportunity to observe the endangered golden monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) in its natural habitat. These primates are characterized by their golden-orange patches on the upper flanks and back and are endemic to the highland forests of the Virunga volcanic mountains, including areas in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Trekking Experience:
Start Time: Treks commence at approximately 7:00 AM, beginning with a briefing at the park headquarters.
Duration: The trekking duration is relatively short, typically lasting between 2 to 4 hours, making it less strenuous compared to gorilla trekking.
Group Size: Visitors are divided into small groups, each accompanied by experienced guides who lead them through the bamboo forests to locate the golden monkeys.
Observation Time: Upon locating the monkeys, visitors are allowed one hour to observe and photograph these active and playful creatures.
Habituated Troops:
The park is home to two habituated golden monkey troops. The larger troop, consisting of 80 to 100 individuals, resides near the Sabyinyo volcano and is the primary group visited by tourists.
Diet and Behavior:
Golden monkeys primarily feed on bamboo shoots, fruits, leaves, and insects. They are known for their lively behavior, often seen leaping between bamboo branches, which provides excellent opportunities for photography.
Conservation Status:
Classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), golden monkeys face threats from habitat loss and human activities. Conservation efforts in Volcanoes National Park aim to protect these primates and their environment.
Booking and Permits:
A permit is required for golden monkey trekking, costing approximately USD 100 per person. It's advisable to book permits in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to ensure availability.
What to Bring:
Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect against insects and thorny vegetation.
Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good traction are recommended due to the sometimes slippery and uneven terrain.
Rain Gear: The region's weather can be unpredictable, so carrying a lightweight rain jacket is advisable.
Water and Snacks: Bring sufficient water and light snacks to maintain energy during the trek.

Embarking on a golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park not only offers a memorable wildlife experience but also contributes to the conservation of these rare primates and their habitat.
